What size cardboard boxes are best for house moving?

When you are moving home it can be difficult to know which types of cardboard packaging are best, and it is extremely hard to guess how many and which size of boxes are best for the job. 

You might have a large house, with only a few items in each room, or you might have a small house which is crammed with items, so it is impossible to generalise as to what you might require.




So what are the best sizes of house moving boxes to buy for moving home?


  • You could take the long technique of measuring every item in your home, one by one, and purchase the right sized boxes according to your requirement. Needless to say, this is extremely time consuming, and most people will not have the free time to do this as there are so many other things to worry about when moving home anyway. 

  • You could use the technique of purchasing lots of medium or large sized cardboard packaging boxes and hope that they do the job. Ten boxes per room is usually a good start in this instance, but you may find you end up with some items which do not fit inside. 

  • You could search for a packaging company online, and they often offer moving packs which are designed for specific sized house moves. This can give you a good idea of what you might need, and they are often made up of a variety of other packaging products as well, including tape and bubble wrap too. 

  • The technique that we recommend, is purchasing from a company that allows you to buy small numbers of heavy-duty boxes for moving at a time, and then purchase a few packs of average sized boxes, and then if you run out or find that some items are too big or too small, then just top up the quantity that you need as you go. You might need to pay a little extra for postage, but it is worth it, and will reduce wastage as well. 

  • You will want to buy boxes that are strong, and that are small enough to carry. If they are too large, they will become too heavy, and therefore impractical for the house moving process. At the same time, you do not want boxes that are too small either, so there is a middle ground that needs to be found.
