Are cardboard boxes with handle holes the best for moving house?

Choosing the right types of packaging material for the purpose of moving home can be tough. As most people move home once every ten years, it is often not a common process, so the prospect of knowing which types of packaging you need for the job is impossible. When it comes to packaging for moving, cardboard boxes are the most common type of material used. They enable you to carry items easily, organise your things easily, protect your things, and pack a lorry easily too. They can also be re used for many other uses as well in future. So when choosing the right types of boxes for your move, there are several factors that you need to consider, such as the sizes of box and quantity of large boxes for moving house, as well as the shapes of the boxes you are going to use too. One question that commonly appears is; are boxes with handle holes better than ordinary boxes for moving?  

• Firstly we need to consider the purpose of handle holes. This is simply to help you to carry boxes easily after considering where to buy boxes for moving. They are typically located half way down the box, and they are just large enough for fingers to fit through. It means that when you pick up a box to lift it, you don’t have to bend down all the way to the floor to pick up the box, you can simply pick it up from the handle holes which are half way down the box instead. If you have back problems and cannot bend down to the floor, then it can be helpful, however if you have back problems then you probably shouldn’t be lifting boxes in the first place.

When you are not carrying the box and it is in the removal lorry or elsewhere, these will simply act as holes for other objects to fall into the box and damage the contents inside, or allow the contents to fall out of the box too. • Handle holes are fine when the box does not weigh a lot. As the holes are typically based half way down the box, on the sides, the full pressure when lifting through those holes goes through the walls of the box. If a box is heavy, and the walls are thin, then the box can completely break when lifted through these holes. When you are moving home, some boxes are going to be heavy and others light, and for the heavy ones, the handle holes will be impractical.

• Generally speaking, boxes for house moving are safest when being lifted from underneath. This is the best way to ensure that the box stays in perfect condition. Holes in a box can get torn open, as cardboard is only made from paper after all, and even the strongest cardboard sheets can get torn. The only way to prevent that from happening is by using boxes which do not have handle holes.

• Normal boxes without handle holes are usually the cheaper option too, because there is one less process that goes into the making of them. They do not need to be passed through another machine to make the holes, and this brings the cost down per box significantly.
