Why is it becoming harder to find cardboard boxes?

Cardboard boxes used to be readily available and used by most businesses on the high street. They therefore used to hand them out as second hand moving boxes online to the public too once they were finished with them, which was useful as they were free. Supermarkets used to do the same service to the public, with old banana boxes.

This free second hand box service is becoming more and more difficult to find, because fewer companies are using packaging in order to help the environment. They are re using boxes wherever possible to ensure they do not need to purchase extra ones, which in turn saves them money.

So why is it becoming so hard to find packing boxes for moving from manufacturers?

  • Manufacturing businesses are not happy to deal with the public. They want to deal with larger companies who will buy thousands of boxes at a time on pallets, rather than sell one or two boxes at a time to the average household who might be moving home or shipping something. This means that they do not offer this service, making it increasingly difficult to buy house removal packing boxes. 

  • When you can find individual boxes occasionally, they will be sold at a high price which isn’t ideal for your requirement. You can buy from some packaging companies which are the exception, but they are hard to find. Packing Solution is a great company and a good place to start looking as their prices are very low. 

  • Packaging companies are moving towards making higher value items rather than low value heavy duty boxes for moving. They make more money this way. As they produce more of other things rather than standard boxes, the boxes become less readily available and harder to find.

  • Although cardboard is recyclable, packaging in general is being looked upon as bad for the environment in today’s world. Therefore less people are looking to purchase boxes of any kind, including both plastic and cardboard, and in turn less producers choose to go into making boxes of any kind, which makes them harder to purchase and find.

  • Finally, shops on the high street are struggling. They need to reduce their costs as much as possible, because they are losing sales to internet businesses. Packaging is often the first place they look to reduce costs. They also stop selling low value items that take up too much room, i.e. the box.
