Moving house is a long process that can last for many months and in some cases years. Long chains often fall through and solicitors drag their feet. You have to fill out endless amounts of documents for the mortgage lender too, and so when you are finally given a completion date this can feel like a huge weight lifted off your shoulders. Now you have to plan the actual move itself before you can relax in your new home.
To organise the move you will need to buy the right packaging materials and you will need to organise a removal company or a removal van to help you. All of these should be purchased far in advance so that you have plenty of time available to pack up your things and so that you have guaranteed you have a van available to move with. There is nothing worse than having to organise these things at the last minute, because legally you have to be out of your current home by a specific time on the completion date otherwise you are technically squatting.
So when it comes to selecting the packaging that you need, you will require boxes, bubble wrap and tape. With the boxes, you will require different types and sizes of box for the different objects in your home and this can be a difficult process of finding what you need. So perhaps you are now in the process of moving your books, and are trying to calculate which size and type of box you should use for this. You need the best boxes for moving books. Here’s what we think:
What makes the best box for moving books?
Books can become quite heavy when you are packing lots of them. If you were to try to carry fifty books, it would be nearly impossible unless you are the world’s strongest man. The best box size for books is therefore a very important factor when deciding what box you need for books. If you use an extra large box that can hold lots of books, it would become too heavy to carry which would make it very impractical. We therefore recommend that you use medium sized boxes for books, which gives you a good equilibrium as it enables you to hold a decent number of books at a time without them becoming too heavy. If you use boxes that are too small, it would become impractical as it would cost you a lot of time packing them up again and again.
As the weight of the books is going to be quite a lot, and because books can be quite delicate, it is always best to use strong, heavy duty, double walled cardboard boxes when shifting books. Strong book moving boxes can hold heavy weights inside of them of up to thirty kilograms, and they are brilliant for stacking on top of one another too so you can fit lots of them into a removal lorry. When you stack the heavy boxes on top of one another you need to know that the boxes at the bottom of the pile are strong enough to hold the weight of the others on top.
For books, we recommend buying packing house for moving boxes without handle holes. The reason being because handle holes, although quite practical, make the box much weaker. As you will be using medium sized boxes for books, it is best to have simple strong boxes that you can carry from underneath, simply because they will be the strongest to use.
For protection of the books, you could use some bubble wrap. Just one small layer around each book, or a layer around all the books collectively in a box will make a big difference and will help to protect them from knocks, bumps, scratching and water damage if it rains.
Make sure that you use the strongest packing tape to help secure the boxes shut. As the boxes are going to be heavy, if you do not use strong tape, they won’t be held shut very well and might cause the books to fall out the bottom of the box. Ordinary supermarket tape will not do, so make sure you buy strong adhesive packing tape.
Rectangular shaped boxes are the best for moving books, as opposed to square. The reason being because books themselves are rectangular, and so you are able to fit more books into a rectangular shaped box than a square one. This will make your move more efficient as the packing will be quicker and easier and you’ll have more in each box.
Ordinary boxes with flaps at either end are the most secure for holding heavy objects such as books, as opposed to boxes with lids. Although boxes with lids are great for storage, such as archive boxes, they are not so practical for heavy items when moving home such as books. These simple boxes are easier to use and store than boxes with lids too.
Cardboard boxes are much better than plastic boxes for moving books. They are equally as strong but they are fully recyclable and re useable, unlike plastic boxes which cannot be recycled. Plastic boxes can crack and break easily, where as cardboard will not break easily and even if they do get damaged the rest of the box is generally ok to use.
When deciding how to pack books for moving, put the largest books in first followed by smaller books surrounding the larger ones. This allows you to fill all the gaps and fit more books into the box. It is a bit like a jigsaw puzzle trying to fit the maximum amount of books into each box, because it saves you time and hassle when packing if you can do this efficiently. The less room left inside of the box the better because it will hold the books in place while you move them without any room to move around.
