Packing boxes don’t like moisture

If you are moving house, large cardboard house moving boxes are a must. They help you carry lots of items at once, which makes your move go much faster and easier. They are perfect for stacking on top of one another in the removal truck so that you can fit more into each load, which saves you trips back and forth, which in turn saves you time and money. They help to protect the things that you put into them too, which prevents breakage of your most delicate household items. They are also excellent value for money compared with plastic containers, and they are much more environmentally friendly as they are made from recycled paper and are fully recyclable too.

Using large cardboard boxes for moving house, storage, or shipping, you may be worried about water damage if it rains. After all, if it were to rain, water would certainly ruin the box and ruin the contents inside too. It could be a nightmare scenario; however, there are certain precautions that you can take to ensure that this doesn’t happen.

There are several ways to protect cardboard boxes from water damage during a move. Here are some tips to help you keep your items safe and dry:

  • Seal the boxes properly: Make sure to seal all the edges of the box with high-quality packing tape. This will prevent water from seeping into the box through the openings.

  • Use plastic wrap or bags: For items that are especially sensitive to water damage, you can wrap them in plastic wrap or place them in plastic bags before putting them in the cardboard boxes. This will create an extra layer of protection against water.

  • Avoid packing water-sensitive items: If you have items that are highly sensitive to water damage, it is best to avoid packing them altogether. This includes items such as books, important documents, and electronics.

  • Use waterproof labels: Use waterproof labels to mark your boxes, so the labels don't get ruined if it rains.

  • Consider using plastic containers: If you are concerned about water damage, you may want to consider using plastic containers instead of cardboard boxes. However, keep in mind that plastic containers may be more expensive, and they may not be as environmentally friendly.

How can you prevent water damage of cardboard boxes?

While using bubble wrap can help protect the contents of cardboard boxes from water damage, there are additional steps you can take to further prevent water damage during a move:

Choose sturdy and high-quality cardboard boxes: Not all cardboard boxes are created equal. Look for boxes made from high-quality materials that are sturdy enough to hold your items and withstand some exposure to moisture.

Seal the boxes properly: Make sure to seal all edges of the box with high-quality packing tape. This will help prevent water from seeping into the box through the openings.

Avoid packing water-sensitive items: If possible, avoid packing items that are highly sensitive to water damage, such as books, important documents, and electronics. If you must pack these items, consider using plastic containers or waterproof bags for added protection.

Keep the boxes off the ground: During the move, try to keep the boxes off the ground as much as possible. This can help prevent water damage if there is any standing water on the ground.

Use waterproof labels: Use waterproof labels to mark your boxes, so the labels don't get ruined if it rains.

By taking these extra steps, you can help ensure that your belongings stay safe and dry during your relocation, even if it is raining. Continue reading below

If you are using large cardboard boxes for moving house, storage, or shipping, you may be worried about water damage if it rains. After all, if it were to rain, water would certainly ruin the box and ruin the contents inside too. It could be a nightmare scenario; however, there are certain precautions that you can take to ensure that this doesn’t happen.

Firstly, you can protect the objects that you put into cardboard boxes using bubble wrap. This will not only protect delicate items from knocks, bumps and scratches, but it will also protect all objects from water damage because bubble wrap is a waterproof material. It is therefore a good idea to wrap up all items that are put into each box with bubble wrap, even if they are not so delicate, as this will protect them from getting wet. Bubble wrap is relatively low cost and if you take this measure you can ensure that your items are safe.

What most large businesses do is wrap the outside of large cardboard boxes for moving houses in stretch wrap, or cling film," as it is commonly known. This is a clear or black-colored type of film that is completely waterproof. It sticks to itself, so you don’t need tape or anything. It is very easy and quick to wrap around cardboard boxes to ensure that no water can touch the cardboard even if it rains, so the contents remain in perfect condition. This is the quickest and one of the safest options, and it is particularly useful for shipping and moving boxes.

The next, obvious thing that you’ll need to think about is being careful about the location of the boxes you are using. If you are storing a box in the attic or garage for a long period of time, always go up to the location and inspect carefully to ensure there isn’t any dampness or water getting to that location. If you store a box in damp conditions, no matter how much you try to protect it, the items will eventually get ruined. When it comes to moving house, if it rains, don’t leave boxes outside; carry them straight to the truck, park the truck close to the front door so you don’t have far to go, and move quickly with the boxes.

If you are shipping a box with a courier, you can’t really control the weather or how the courier will treat your parcel. It is not uncommon for parcels to arrive completely drenched and ruined in the post, we have all experienced that before. The best thing you can do in this instance is to wrap the parcel in cling film / stretch wrap and write on the outside of the parcel FRAGILE so it tells the courier to look after that parcel.

When you are storing your flat packed large boxes moving before you use them, ensure that you store them in a dry location. If they do get wet, simply leave them to dry in a warm room. Once they have dried out, they will be back to normal and fine to use, as they are only made from paper after all.

As a last resort to protect a cardboard box from moisture, simply wrap lots of strong packing tape around the box in all directions. It can take a while to do but will help to protect that box from damage if you don’t have the time to pick up some stretch wrap or bubble wrap to help with protection.
