Should You Use Square or Rectangular Boxes for Moving?

Choosing the right size, shape and type of cardboard box when moving house can be tough. Most people move house once every seven or eight years, so packaging solutions is probably not going to be a process that you are particularly familiar with. Actually finding boxes in the first place can be a difficult process, because not many retailers offer cardboard boxes. The ones that do, will often have a small selection at a high price, which is far from ideal. The first factor to consider when choosing the shape of a box to use for moving is your ability to carry the box when full. For this reason, medium sized cardboard boxes near me are usually the best as they do not become too heavy to carry when full. They are practical and useful. Both square shapes and rectangular shaped boxes are easy enough to carry and there isn’t much of a difference in this respect. The next factor is how easily your household objects will fit into the moving boxes. Some household objects are going to be bigger and wider than others and for this reason it is always good to have a variety of different sized boxes when moving. How easy it is to stack boxes in the removal van or lorry is the next factor to consider. Ideally what you want is to be able to fit as many boxes into each load of the lorry as is possible. This will save you trips back and forth, making the removal day quicker and easier, which in turn will save you money. It is easier to stack rectangular boxes than square boxes, as the shape of the lorry is rectangular, so if you stick to using lots of rectangular boxes you can fit a few more into the load. Always make sure you use strong heavy duty double walled boxes when moving, as they are strong enough to stack on top of one another while single walled boxes won’t be. 

You need to consider how difficult it will be to carry the boxes through the doorframes of your house too. If the boxes are too large or wide, they won’t fit through easily, which will make transporting them nothing short of a nightmare. Always buy practical sized boxes that are not too small but not too big either. 

It is much easier to buy rectangular boxes than square ones, as most packaging companies offer a wide variety of rectangular boxes as they are the most common. It is actually quite hard to find perfectly square boxes. For this reason, it is definitely another factor as to why you should stick to rectangular boxes.

Make sure that you write on the outside of the boxes and say what is inside of them, using a permanent marker pen. This will make unpacking a breeze and will speed up the entire moving day. You could also write to say which boxes contain the most fragile items. 

Rectangular packing boxes have a bigger opening at the top than square boxes. This makes them that little bit easier to pack with your belongings, so this could make packing a bit quicker. It will also make unpacking easier too.

Always use cardboard boxes as opposed to plastic boxes for moving. The reason being because they are recyclable, so they are mostly made from recycled paper and they are fully recyclable after you have used them too. They can be collected with your normal household recycling collection each week, or you can drop them at your local recycling centre too. 

Cardboard boxes are much better value for money than plastic options too. They cost five times less than plastic boxes and because moving house is so expensive, it is definitely worth saving the extra pennies on cardboard boxes. After all, you will probably need a lot of boxes for an entire house move anyway.
